Hello Community , for me
I enjoy listening to RUMI | Sufi Music (Spotify link )
Shams Tabrizi
Armand Amar
I’m taking a rare break from chiptune music for a change of pace, and also I was thinking that maybe music from the era of 8-bit computing is… not old enough.
My grandmother, Ruth Towers, was a very accomplished classical pianist. The recordings she made during her life are very special because they contain nice little mistakes and rough spots to remind you that it’s being performed by a human, her very deliberate sense of timing, and just by the pieces she chose which were often the composers’ not so popular selections.
I am really enjoying The Notorious B.I.G. Ft. Frank Sinatra // Blue Eyes Meets Bed Stuy // Full Album - YouTube
Great recommendation.
Really well made “Medieval” remixes of classic hip-hop tunes:

I am really loving this album by Rioghan. It has some of my favourite musicians involved in this album. Its a great listen if you like Katatonia and Leprous
Lately I’ve been listening to a lot to Bárbara Tinoco. It was my top artist by a long mile according to spotify last year.
She’s a Portuguese artist and describes her songs as utopic-romantic-depressing. Although romantic songs are not really like my type, I really like her voice and the way she writes songs, which makes up for me not liking the genre that much. She also writes songs about life in general, which are great. I’ll just leave here two of them and a rough lyrics translation for them:
-
Bárbara Tinoco - Antes Dela Dizer Que Sim (Vídeo Oficial) - YouTube - Before she’s said yes
Tells a funny story of two lovers who were afraid to know each other better.
Bárbara participated in “The Voice” Portugal and was rejected in the first phase, but left the jury panel with a lot of doubts because she clearly showed talent. So after the rejection, they asked her to sing another song. She then sang this one and immediately made the jury regret rejecting her. It didn’t matter because she became successful anyway!
"Before she's said yes" english translation
Ele não sabe o nome dela
He doesn’t know her name
Tem medo de perguntar
He’s afraid to ask
Ela é como atriz de novela
She’s like a soap opera actress
Que ele gosta de ver sonhar
Whom he likes to see dreamEla não sabe o nome dele
She doesn’t know his name
Tem medo de perguntar
She’s afraid to ask
E se as promessas coradas
And what if their their red-faced promises
Foram a bebida a falar
Were just the drink talkingE ele não contou
And he didn’t tell
Mas ela não escondeu
But she didn’t hide
Com quem a noite passou
Who she spent the night with
Jura ela o seu Romeu
She swears he’s her Romeo
Ele quer mais
He wants more
Ela também
She does too
Talvez por isso nesse dia
Perhaps that’s why that day
Ele foi vê-la à luz do dia
He went to see her in the light of dayEle gosta das formas dela
He likes her shapes
E ela diz que ele tem bom ar
She says that he looks swell
O mundo finge não saber
The world pretends not to know
Que ele não é rapaz de fiar
That he’s a boy that shouldn’t be trustedEla tem um novo sorriso
She has a new smile
Mas medo de o parilhar
But is afraid to share it
Ele gosta mais do que é preciso
More than he needs to, he likes
De a desafiar
challenging herEle que sabia de cor
He who knew by heart
As moças mais fáceis
The easiest girls
Engates mais rascas
Had the sleaziest pickupsEla que ficava em casa fechada
She’s the one who stayed locked up at home
Com medo de ser
Afraid of being
Só mais um rabo-de-saias
Just another skirt-clad behind[Chorus]
Ele agora diz que a ama
Now he says he loves her
Dormem juntos só para dormir
They sleep together, just to sleep
Ele gosta dela de pijama
He likes her in pijamas
E ela de o corrigir
And she likes correcting himEla agora diz o que o ama
Now she says she loves him
Dormem juntos só para dormir
They sleep together, just to sleep
Gosta dele desarmado
She likes him unarmed
E ele de a ver despir
And he of seeing her undressE as velhinhas na cidade
And the old ladies in town
Susurram “no meu tempo não era assim”
Whisper “in my day, it wasn’t like this”
Aonde já se viu dois enamorados
Oh where else have you seen two lovers
Com cara de parvos
Looking so foolish
Antes dela dizer que sim
Before she’s said yesMas ele ainda se lembra
But he still remembers
De descer aquelas escadas
To climb down those stairs
Ganhar coragem e perguntar
Work up the courage and ask
E como raio tu te chamas?
What the heck is your name?
Ele fingiu-se de irritada
She pretended to be mad
Ofendida pela trama
And offended by the incident
Ela ganhou coragem para o amar
She gathered the courage to love him
E perguntou “e tu, como raio te chamas?”
And asked “and you, what the heck is your name?”[Chorus]
Ele agora diz que a ama
Now he says he loves her
Dormem juntos só para dormir
They sleep together, just to sleep
Gosta dele desarmado
She likes him unarmed
E ele de a ver despir
And he of seeing her undressE as velhinhas na cidade
And the old ladies in town
Susurram “no meu tempo não era assim”
Whisper “in my day, it wasn’t like this”
Aonde já se viu dois enamorados
Oh where else have you seen two lovers
Com cara de parvos
Looking so foolish
Antes dela dizer que sim
Before she’s said yes

Bárbara Tinoco - tragédia - YouTube - Tragedy
Song about trying to see life in a more positive light and not being afraid to take risks.
"Tragedy" english translation
Que todos os problemas do mundo fossem esse
May all the problems of the world be that one
A vida virou tragédia grega isso acontece
Life turned into a Greek tragedy, that happens
Só que eu sou mesmo mais de rir p’ra não chorar
But I’m more of a laughing person so I don’t cry
Sorriso cansado, desinspirado, ainda a cantar
Tired smile, uninspired, still singing[Chorus]
Tragédia é …
Tragedy is …
Tragédia é escrever cançõe
Tragedy is to write songs
Com poucas emoções
With little emotions
Quem diz viver paixões
Who says to live through love
Com poucas ilusões
With little ilusions
É jantar salada
[Tragedy is] To have salad for dinner
Quem diz ficar calada
Stay quiet
Casa desarrumada
Messy house
É usar tampões
[Tragedy is] To use tampons
Saber nada de livros
Know nothing about books
Ouvir canções aos gritos
Listen to loud songs
É amor sem gemidos
Make love without moaning
Tantas opiniões
So many opinionsQue os sonhos são muito mais de construir do que sonhar
Dreams are a lot more about building than dreaming
E a sorte dá trabalho a quem agarrar
And luck requires work from those who take it
Coleciono desgostos pra me inspirar
I collect hearthbreaks to inpire me
8 ou 80, demasiado intensa, sobre o que é que eu estava a cantar?
8 or 80, overly intense, what was I singing about?
Ahh…Hmm…[Chorus]
Tragédia é …
Tragedy is …
Tragédia é escrever canções
Tragedy is to write songs
Com poucas emoções
With little emotions
Quem diz viver paixões

Tantas opiniões
So many opinionsNão digas que vieste daqui
Don’t tell me you come from here
Mas eu não sou boa pessoa
But I’m not a good person
Às vezes desejo mal
Sometimes I wish ill
A quem me magoa
To those who hurt me
E eu nunca confio em pessoas que assim são
And I never trust people that are like that
Tragédia é sentir coisas más
Tragedy is to feel bad things
Mas dizer que não
But deny them
É não mandar ninguém à merda
[Tragedy is] Not saying “fuck you” to anyone
Como é que a tua alma sossega
How do you calm your soul?
Eu estou sem educação
I’m being bad-mannered
(Oh menina, olha a língua!)
(Little girl, watch your tongue!)Nunca ter prometido
Never have promised anything
Nunca ter desiludido
Never have disappointed
Tragédia é nunca ter vivido
Tragedy is never to have lived
Com medo de ouvir um não
Afraid of hearing a “no”[Chorus]
Tragédia é …

Where would forums be without a “what are you listening to thread!?”
I’m late, but
currently
sorry if you don’t have spotify. “clubhell/DarkELectro playlist.”
Most recently it’s been Depeche Mode. They have a lot of good songs, but Useless and Nothing’s Impossible are the insistent ones for me lately. I like the feisty Dave Gahan in the Useless video. It picks me up when I feel beleaguered, and Nothing’s Impossible gives me hope in a general way outside of the specific romantic intent of the song.
Skyfall by Adele
I follow jazz guitar learning website (MWG - Matt Warnock Guitar) so I tend to listen to diff versions of what the current TOM (tune of the month) is. Jan '23 it was “Killer Joe” so I listen a lot to couple excellent recordings:
Kenny Burrell “Killer Jow”
Brother Jack McDuff “Killer Joe”
trying to lift some licks and whatnot.
Outside of it some Mozart quartets, Brian Eno and Hawaiian and Japanese language lessons.
And yet there is no Grateful Dead on your list. Consider me shocked.
Of course I listen to the Grateful Dead, just not usually while coding.
Do you have a favorite live set?
I only recognized the logo, I am not a Deadhead myself. Have heard their liveshows are a very special thing though.
Yeah, definitely, I’m not the biggest fan of their studio albums but if you or anyone else wants to check out their live recordings, these are good starting points imo:
Grateful Dead Live at Robert F. Kennedy Stadium on 1973-06-10:
Quite accessible, this has the most views of all recordings on archive.org for a reason. Easily the recording that I’ve listened to the most myself.
Grateful Dead Live at Old Renaissance Faire Grounds on 1972-08-27:
This show has been released on DVD as Sunshine Daydream.
Here’s the official album release of that show (accompanying the DVD release):
Live / Dead (1969):
This was the first live album the Grateful Dead released, recorded by Owsley when he still was with them. The sound quality is insane for the time, the first live rock album to use 16-tracks recording. Sadly the original master is way better than the 2001 remaster that’s on the official Youtube and Spotify.
Of course the bands style changed over the years, live recordings from the 80s will sound different, but late 60s / early 70s is the period that I personally enjoy the most so far.
The logo that I’m using for my avatar is a modern version of the original logo of DrRacket, the IDE of the Racket language.
This song has been stuck in my head for the past few days: Maisie Peters - Psycho [Official Video] - YouTube
It’s already tuesday, but nevertheless here is a catchy song from the 80s. I often remember this song when my first day of the week happens to be a bit like a ‘manic monday’.
That is a very special song to me
I remember the first time I heard it was almost 15 years ago in an English class, and it stuck with me ever since. Like you, I usually feel obliged to give this song a listen if my Monday is being particularly crazy.
Here is another catchy song from the early 2000s. The popular Japanese singer Tomoko Kawase (Tommy February6 and Tommy Heavenly6 are her alter-ego pseudonyms as singer) with ‘Bloomin’.
Today I re-listened a series of 3 songs that together tell the tale of an old men adjusting to “new times”:
