Now that we’re nearing the end of the challenge, what badges do we want to award when it’s done?
Perhaps
- Rare: achieved at least a bronze medal for each week.
- Ultimate: achieved 48 silver or gold medals
- Legendary: achieved 48 gold medals
Now that we’re nearing the end of the challenge, what badges do we want to award when it’s done?
Perhaps
I nominate a “At least you try” very common badge for people who did get at least 1 bronze
lmao, sound like a fun gag. I second this.
Sounds good to me. I should catch up on the ones I haven’t done…
Another option would be a badge for 48 medals, where at least 16 are gold, and at most 16 are bronze.
Good idea. I nominate one for 48 medals, where exactly 5 are gold and none are bronze… (jjk, obviously).
OK folks, let’s nail this down so we can work with @iHiD to get this into the code base this month.
I propose:
type | name | description | icon |
---|---|---|---|
common | #48in24 Participant |
Earned a medal in #48in24 |
? |
rare | Michael Phelps | Earned 48 medals in #48in24 |
? |
ultimate | Paavo Nurmi | Earned 48 silver or gold medals in #48in24 |
? |
legendary | Usain Bolt | Earned 48 gold medals in #48in24 |
? |
Ref List of multiple Olympic gold medalists - Wikipedia for the names.
I suppose the icons can be variations on clusters of appropriately coloured medals.
I know Jeremy is extremely busy preparing for the bootcamp. I’m no designer. Does anyone want to have a go at badge icons?
For reference, the other badge icons are in website/app/images/icons at 0ed76bda5449a9a1b0de95e6cc2ca85745efdd85 · exercism/website · GitHub
I’m happy to put the badges together. Thank you though!
It’s been very helpful for you work them through. Thank you
Let’s add some women, like Imane Khelif.
Isabell Werth
To avoid the various potential abuse emails I get about about drugs and/or animals, maybe Simone Biles (7/2/2) or Larisa_Latynina (9/5/4)?
In the interest of moving this forward in a timely manner, I’m voting for Larisa Latynina, for the legendary one.
Seems fitting to name the achievements for 48in24 after the people with the biggest olympic achievements.
An update: the PR that defines the badges is in place. I’m awaiting the icons from the extremely idle (not!) Jeremy. And then there will need to be some database scripting from Jeremy or perhaps Erik to award them once the PR is accepted and merged.
I’d like to mention that while Latynina doesn’t seem to be actively supporting russian invasion of Ukraine, she has expressed an opinion that some may find controversial
Thank you for pointing that out.
It’s all so messy, isn’t it. So many layers to everything. I think I’m ok with that point of view in terms of it not violating any principles Exercism would hold (unlike if she was a pro-invasion, which would be a no-go for me). I can understand that someone who’s spent their life feeling patriotic towards their country and competing in sport for it might not feel like that country’s identity should be invalidated by the actions of the country’s current leaders, etc. Even if I think there’s a greater perspective to be had here.
The opinion relayed (and paraphrased by me) is that she thinks that Russian athletes that want to compete under a neutral flag is unpatriotic.
So that others do not have to click through to figure out what is being referenced. The link to go to is good for verification though! Thanks for that @ik1 .
In order to avoid these kind of problem in the future, I think we should consider picking animals for badge.
You can do a lot of fun stuffs categorized them, and they are in general universally recognized.
Thank you all for the wonderful work with this year’s challenges!
Will there be a hard cutoff point today (2024), or will we have a bit more time in 2025 to complete any missing challenges? I appreciate that it’d be fairer for people that have already completed them to get the appropriate badges, but it’d be nice motivation to complete any leftovers
In any case, happy new year, and I hope 2025 will be as productive and creative!
End of day on Jan 1 2025, UTC. The extra day is grace period to avoid dealing with individual timezones.
Exercism typically uses a cutoff that is one day late in western Europe. So people in Hawaii might still complete challenges on the morning of the 1st of January, and people in New Zealand might still complete challenges on the morning of the 2nd.
