Create new Jai track

The Jai language is a systems language being built by Jonathan Blow (and team). It is a bit akin to Odin, in that it shares many stylistic choices with the C-family, but aims to fix the issues that C has.

Unfortunately, the language is still closed-source, but there is a closed beta to which you can apply (if you can find out how). I’ve just been accepted into the closed beta and would like to start working on exploring what the Jai track would look like. I think we’re allowed to have Jai code in the open, except for the compiler and the builtin modules.

Does anyone want to join me on this journey?

Is the goal to open source it? I’m not sure how you’d build a track without general access to the compiler.

That is the good yes. A time has not yet been communicated but it might be this year.

And I have access to the compiler so I can build the track, we just can’t publish the track as students can’t yet download the compiler.

I’d like to help if I can.

I’m not in the beta, though. I just know that Jai exists, and sounds intriguing.

I think you’d have to be in the beta to really be able to work on the track. Maybe you could try getting in?

I’m intrigued to do another language track with you Erik

Would a test runner image be available while it’s still in beta? Otherwise, I’m not seeing where I might make concrete contributions until Jai is out of that closed beta. From what I’ve seen online, I’m not quite the intended target audience, and admission to the beta seems to be at the discretion of the core devs.

Once it’s out of closed beta, yeah I’ll give it a shot. If we can spin up the track quickly, we might be able to capitalize on some of the publicity surrounding Jai’s launch.

No, there won’t be a test runner available until the compiler is no longer closed.
