Criteria and Criterion: Can 'criteria' be singular? | Merriam-Webster indicates there’s some ambiguity to whether you can use criteria in the singular sense. Criteria in the singular is much more prevalent in the English I hear day to day.
Perhaps we can use a simpler word here and sidestep any potential confusion? We could say the function represents a rule or something along those lines.
Criteria is definitely plural in Greek, and that’s how we still use it today. Based on the Merriam-Webster article, there doesn’t seem to be much ambiguity about whether it is plural or singular; nevertheless, there is a tendency to use ‘criteria’ as singular. Is my understanding correct?
As for the PR, there’s really no need to change criteria to criterion, or even debate whether it is plural or singular. Just change the sentence to:
Implement the generic Filter function to filter records according to the criteria given by a function.
Edit: In Greek, this sentence would still be used even if there is only one criterion.
I’d leave this to the Go maintainers to determine if there is a need to change anything ;)
