GitHub Syncer and syncing between two workplaces

Hi

I am using GitHub Syncer, which is straightforward on one machine. But I noticed it’s more of a backup feature than the conventional repository more straightforward to sync between two machines.

I’m not an Insider (paid) so GitHub Syncer backs up just the solution file after submission in different branches. It’s not like I push to GitHub my entire exercise (including test files etc.) any time I want. Exercism auto backsup after every submission I think.

So I’m wondering how do I work on an exercise on two different computers? E.g I work on computer A then later want to continue on computer B. I know I can do this the manual way using Git and GitHub, but I don’t want duplicate work on my GitHub since I am using Exercism’s GitHub Syncer feature already.

Should I say manually download ONLY the solution file and merge/replace my local copy before I start working on any computer? Then when I submit my exercise, GitHub Syncer will take care of the push through autobackup?

Typically you would do a git pull to sync remote changes to your local machine before doing any local work. If you do work from two locations, you’d need to merge those changes later.

The github repository is only updated after a submit button press, and perhaps also only on request (if not automatically scheduled).

Similarly, this is also making an exercism download --track=x --exercise=y

On either machine, at any time you want to work, do the exercism download --track=x --exerise=y --force and you will get the up to date information.

If you are working on one machine, and realize you want to work on the other machine, you can submit the iteration.

If you want to store it to a git repository, then do the normal work required to transfer that there, and then when finished submit to the platform.

Because of the tests not being available on the repository, the most complete solution will be to download from the Exercism platform, anyway.

Amazing. I had thought exercism download… downloads a fresh copy every time. Little did I know exercism download and exercim submit was like pulling and pushing to the same repository. The GitHub Syncer is just an extension (backup) of that then!

Thanks!
