Go track updated to Go 1.25

The Go track was updated to Go 1.25 :tada:

Upgrading to Go 1.25

Updating the track to Go 1.25 means that all the track tooling, including the test runner is able to accept code written in Go 1.25. Previously the track was on Go 1.22, which meant that you were unable to submit code to Exercism using new language features in Go 1.23-1.25. That’s now possible, and we intend to keep a close eye on upgrading these more regularly.

Minimum Go version recommended by default is Go 1.23

In addition to upgrading the track tooling, we also set the go directive in the go.mod file of the exercises to go 1.23. Previously it was go 1.18. Since Go 1.21, this directive sets a minimum version requirement, which means we recommend to have Go 1.23 or later installed on your system to get the best experience on Exercism.

Can I use Exercism with a version lower than Go 1.23?

Yes! If you have a version lower than Go 1.23 in your system and you don’t want or can’t upgrade, you can still use Exercism via the online editor and use alll the features in the new versions of Go.

If using the CLI, you can still submit the solutions and let the Exercism test runner run your code in a more recent version of Go.

However, for the best experience using the CLI, we recommend you try to run the tests locally before submitting the exercise! If you are using Go < 1.23 on your machine and you want to run the tests locally you must either:

  • Upgrade to a newer version of Go. See the section below on how you can do this.
  • Lower the version of Go in the go.mod file of the exercise to match the version you have. Note that this will limit the language features you can use to solve the exercise. You’ll only be able to use the language features up to the version you have.

Upgrading to a new version of Go

You can check which version of Go you have installed locally by running:

$ go version

If the command output shows a version < 1.23, you can either;

  • Check the Go installation instructions to install the msot recent version of Go (Go 1.25 at the time of writing).
  • If you are using a package manager, check if your package manager allows to upgrade to a new version that is >= 1.23.
  • If you want to try Go 1.25 without touching the Go version installed on your system, check Managing multiple Go versions.
