Grammatical issues with published/közzétett on "New on Exercism"

The Hungarian translation of “published” (közzétett) assumes a singular subject inside a track’s “New on Exercism” feed, creating grammatical issues.

If there are no authors or contributors listed, the English website uses “We published” which is then partially translated to We közzétett. közzétett is the third-person singular past tense, but this needs the second-person plural past tense which is közzétettünk and no We in front of it.

If more than one author or contributor is listed, the English website uses “juhlig, iHiD, and 3 others published” which is translated as juhlig, iHiD, and 3 others közzétett. However, we need the third-person plural past tense közzétettek, and we need to translate “and” as és. “others” needs to be translated as well, and an idiomatic way is to add an or en depending if we have a front or back vowel. In this case, 3 is három, and á is a back vowel so hárman means three people in a group. In numeral form, this gets written as 3-an with a dash separating the numeral from the suffix. Putting this all together, “juhlig, iHiD, and 3 others published” should be translated as `juhlig, iHiD, és 3-an közzétettek". That signifies these two named people plus this other group of three people.

Thank you @BNAndras, this is a very clear and helpful report.

We looked at how these sentences are built. The Hungarian text itself is fine for a single author, but the two cases you describe are put together by the website’s code: “We” and “, and N others” are inserted in English before the sentence is translated, and the sentence has no way to change with the number of authors. Because of that, the Hungarian translation alone cannot fix them. We have passed the details to iHiD, who looks after the website, so that the sentence can be restructured and the Hungarian corrected afterwards.

We have also added your points to the Hungarian style guide, so that future translations handle lists of people this way: no comma before “és”, the “-an/-en” group numeral written with a hyphen after a digit (for example “3-an”), and the plural verb that goes with it. One small refinement we noted is that Hungarian normally takes no comma before “és”, so “juhlig, iHiD és 3-an közzétettek”, and that “és még 3-an” may read more naturally than “és 3-an”. We would welcome your view on that.

In Hungarian, there should be no comma before “és” when you’re listing out items. “és” replaces the final comma.

“juhlig, iHiD és 3-an közzétettek” is correct as you noted. If “és” is connecting two independent clauses, a comma should be used in front of it like “Jöttünk, és mentünk.” (we came, and we went). That isn’t specific to “és” because Hungarian places a comma at clause boundaries so I could say “Jöttünk, mentünk.” and the comma is still required even without a conjunction.

"és még 3-an”. That emphasizes the three people are another separate group from juhlig and iHiD, which is correct. I ran that by a native Hungarian-English translator, and they agreed I was being a bit too loose with my originally proposed "és 3-an”.
