Issues in "Live on the <track-name> track…"

In the Live on the track feed, I’m seeing “Valaki a(z) United States országból started Luhn”. This should be “Valaki a(z) Egyesült Államokból elkezdte a(z) Luhn feladatot”. There’s a similar variant where it says someone attempted Luhn as an example. That should be “Valaki a(z) Egyesült Államokból megpróbálta a(z) Luhn feladatot”.

“a(z) United States országból” is problematic. Country names should be translated where possible. In Hungarian, “the United States” is translated as “Egyesült Államok”. “a(z) Egyesült Államok országból” is awkward however since we’re saying from the United States country. It’d be more natural to say “a(z) Egyesült Államokból” or from the United States. Removing országból is important because Hungarian often uses ország in country names. “a(z) Németország országból” feels unnatural and would be saying from the German country country.

Thank you @BNAndras, this is a clear report.

We traced it to two separate gaps in the website’s code, not the Hungarian translation itself. The metric verbs (“started”, “attempted”, “published”, “opened”, “merged”, “completed”) are written directly in English in a TypeScript file (MetricText.ts) that never goes through translation, unlike the rest of that component. Separately, the country name shown (“United States”) comes straight from a fixed, English-only list on the backend (Country.name_for), so no locale ever sees a translated country name there, regardless of which language is displayed. We have filed both as exercism/website#10337 and passed it to iHiD.

On “a(z) United States országból”: once country names are localised, we agree the current Hungarian wording will need to change. Right now “Valaki a(z) {{countryName}} országból” follows our usual rule for values we can’t see at translation time (attaching the suffix to a fixed word, “ország”, rather than guessing the vowel harmony of the interpolated value). That rule is why it wasn’t written as “{{countryName}}-ból” directly: most Hungarian country names work fine that way (“Németországból”), but several common ones don’t end in “ország” at all (“Egyesült Államok”, “Kanada”, “India”), so a suffix glued onto the raw placeholder would be wrong for those.

Once country names are localised, the cleanest fix is likely a Hungarian country-name list that already carries the “from” form (e.g. “Egyesült Államokból”, “Németországból”) passed in as its own value, rather than composing the suffix in the UI string. We’ve noted this in the issue for whoever picks it up. We’ll revisit the Hungarian wording once that lands.

Another issue is the feed uses the English names for exercises.

“Valaki a(z) Nigeria országból completed Hello World” pops up, but in Hungarian this exercise is named “Helló, világ!”. This feed should probably use the Hungarian name for a consistent experience.

Good catch, thank you. We traced this one too: the feed builds the exercise name from exercise[:title], the raw attribute, instead of exercise.title, the method that applies the translated name. It’s a one-line fix, but there’s a wrinkle worth flagging: this part of the feed is broadcast once, over a websocket, to every connected viewer at once, so whichever locale is active when it’s built is what every viewer sees, not necessarily each viewer’s own locale. Fixing the raw-attribute bug alone would make it look right sometimes and wrong other times in a way that’s hard to pin down, so it may need a bigger change (sending the exercise’s slug and resolving the name client-side, per viewer) rather than the one-line fix. Added both to exercism/website#10337 for iHiD.
