I keep having issures/failures, the download for Windows’ 64-bit is a zip file, but the *.exe inside the zip file throws a window s’ error: this app ccannot be run on your computer. it’s sad, because I already have msys2 (MinW-64 nit), lua, perl, pythhon, tcl, free pascal, free basic, and virtual machines (dos-box-x, virtual box, etc,) all, installed here, but your apps and exercises cannot/will not use any of that! it’s bad, because I am using the lua and tcl tracks, and interestted in the python and perl ones, but while I can and do
There are a couple of Windows downloads listed under Release exercism-v3.5.8 · exercism/cli · GitHub for different setups (ARM, x86/64, etc.). Which download are you using?
the one under release that specifically says “Windows-64bit” – the 64bit implies that it should be build for Windows/64 on a 64 bit cpu, no?
But it turns out, it is not, in fact, the zip file seems to contain 32 bit binaries (looking at the the exe file headers in a hex editor.)
But, I also discovered the github releases page is weird, too: This time I followed the link for the automated installer, and that one seems to work fine. I still consider it an issue, however, because it’s counter-intuitive/misleading: if it clains to be a 64 bit version, it actually needs to be a 64 bit version. Modern Windows 64/Home does not have that WoW-16 OR WoW-32 infrastructure/isolation layer to run older 32 bit software as if it’s 64 bit software. It just gives that error, more or less: “Windows cannot execute this binary, contact the developer…” Which is what nmy post was because I could not find another way to "contact the developer. I am reasonably certain many thousands of userwill run in to those kind of errors, and decide to just delete the file, and go do something else that does not require all the messing around and fixing. (I’m od enough to remember all the hassle of transitioning from 16-bit DOS to 32-bit Windows (NT/95) as well. That was why I reformatted my hard drive at the time, and installed Linux.
ok, to be completely specific, following the link you gave, the link textforvthedownload says/claims " exercism-3.5.8-windows-64bit.zip" url: https://github.com/exercism/cli/releases/download/v3.5.8/exercism-3.5.8-windows-64bit.zip --again, it says/claims “windows-64bit”, so I epect it to actually] betargetting 64bit Windows.
I would suggest downloading
exercism-3.5.8-windows-x86_64.zip
exercism-3.5.8-windows-x86_64.zip and exercism-3.5.8-windows-64bit.zip have the same listed checksum though so they are identical. cli/.goreleaser.yml at ca2c7a32f673e831d11de78d66ac2404fe563bee · exercism/cli · GitHub shows the release build (x86_64) and installer build (64-bit) compile the same code for Windows.
So if the 64-bit installer build isn’t working, that would indicate the x86_64 release probably won’t either. Is there a chance you’re on ARM64? exercism-3.5.8-windows-arm64.zip is worth a shot.
