In the following section, under the Deep decomposing heading:
Decomposing and assigning values from arrays inside of an array (also known as a nested array), works in the same way a shallow decomposing does, but needs delimited decomposition expression (()) to clarify the values context or position:
the “values” in “…to clarify the values context or position:” seems to be possessive and so should have an apostrophe.
However, I’m uncertain if “values” is meant to be plural or singular right there, which will dictate where the apostrophe will go. So:
“…to clarify the value’s context or position:”
versus
“…to clarify the values’ context or positions:”
The fact that “position” is singular in the original suggests that “values” is meant to be singular-possessive. But “values” being plural-possessive makes logical sense to me in the context of the whole sentence. One way to remove the ambiguity (if it exists outside of my own brain) is to replace “the” with “each”, i.e.:
“…to clarify each value’s context or position:”
…which I’ll humbly submit as my official suggestion.
I’ll wait to see if that third one is resolved with Meatball’s input so I can just do a single PR for all three–unless there’s some reason to do them separately (e.g., if the PRs need to link 1-to-1 to the forum posts).
A single pull request with 3 different commits would be fine (maybe four if we make the first 22 lines of the introduction and about files identical to “buy” some improvements that were done in one of the files). But a link back to the appropriate forum topic in the commit message might be nice to have.
It originally caught my eye as an “about grammar” issue–it’s possessive so it should have an apostrophe. So, it’s AT LEAST about the grammar.
When I went on to fix it (simply by adding an apostrophe), I realized that I didn’t know if the original writer meant for “value” to be plural or singular, a fact that would dictate where to put that apostrophe. And, as you say, it being plural or singular does change the meaning in some way.
And so the logic to coming up with my suggestion was:
-I think the whole section reads as if we’re referring to multiple values there.
-“…to clarify the values’ context or positions:” is kind of a mouthful. And, “context” could or could not be pluralized there.
-saying “…to clarify each value’s context or position:” resolves both the grammar and the potential meaning issue.
