The Hungarian translation of “Exercism” (accusative form) is rendered as “Exercisst” instead of the correct “Exercism-öt” — this typo appears in at least two places on the same page (the donation banner and the body text).
Thank you @dem4ron, and welcome! Great catch.
We have corrected all five places where “Exercisst” appeared on the donation banner and in the body text, and they now read “Exercism-öt”. The fix will be live on the site shortly, once the new translations have been published.
We have also added a note to the Hungarian guide so that future translations attach case suffixes to “Exercism” with a hyphen.
I have a question about the other cases, so that we get them right everywhere. The site currently has forms like “Exercismen”, “Exercismnek”, “Exercismmel”, “Exercismről” and “Exercismet” (without a hyphen). Should all of these take a hyphen, for example “Exercism-en”, “Exercism-nek” and “Exercism-mel”? If so, which vowel does each suffix take (for example “Exercism-öt” versus “Exercism-et”, and “-ön” versus “-en”)? Once you tell us, we will update the guide and correct the existing pages.
Yes, each of those should have a hyphen.
According to A magyar helyesírás szabályai when a suffix is added to a word that keeps its foreign/original spelling and the pronunciation of the word’s ending doesn’t match how it’s written, a hyphen is inserted before the suffix (e.g., “Exercism-öt,” “Chicago-ban,” “New York-i”). If the spelling already matches the pronunciation, no hyphen is needed.
Exercism is pronounced as “Ekszörsziz(ö)m” where the last ö is pronounced with closed mouth and both "ö"s are between e and ö, but since the ö is a more dominant sound it should lean towards that.
Therefore the best would be Exercism-öt, Exercism-ön.
Thank you @dem4ron, this is very helpful, and thank you for the rule and the reference.
We have changed every case suffix on “Exercism” across the Hungarian site to take a hyphen: 744 places in total, in the interface, the exercise and track pages, the docs and the blog. The changes will be live shortly, once the new translations have been published. The Hungarian style guide now says the same, so future translations will follow it.
Following your -öt and -ön, we treated the name as ending in ö for the other suffixes: Exercism-nek, Exercism-nél, Exercism-ben, Exercism-be, Exercism-ből, Exercism-re, Exercism-ről, Exercism-től, Exercism-ért, Exercism-mel and Exercism-höz. Please tell us if any of these should take a different vowel.
Two small questions:
- The adjective form, currently “Exercismes” in two places. Should it be “Exercism-es” or “Exercism-ös”?
- The command line program is written in lowercase as
exercism. In running text we now have “az exercism-höz” and “az exercism-ben”. Is that right for the lowercase name too?
Yes, that’s right. Let’s use “Exercism-ös”
Thank you @dem4ron, and sorry for the delay in seeing your reply. We have changed “Exercismes” to “Exercism-ös” in the two places it appeared, and we have recorded your answers in the Hungarian style guide. That covers the lowercase command name as well as the suffix forms we listed. The change will be live shortly, once the new translations have been published.
Thank you for the careful explanation and the reference. It has helped a lot.
